Student Visa
A study permit is a document issued by designated organizations that permits foreign nationals to get educated at learning institutions or colleges in Canada. Many foreign residents need a study permit to study in Canada. You must have all the necessary documents before you apply for a study permit.
The study permit is not a visa of any kind. It doesn’t permit you to enter Canada. The applicant also requires a visitor visa or an electronic travel authorization (e-TA). If your study permit is approved you are likely to be issued a visa too along with your study permit.
Use the Student Direct Stream
If you are a resident of China, India, Morocco, Pakistan, etc. There is a possibility that you might get your study permit faster. To do this you must apply for the study permit online through the Student Direct Stream.
A study permit is valid for as long as the duration of the course along with an additional 90 days. These 90 days are for you to prepare for your departure or extend your stay duration. Apart from this, your duration depends upon the following factors:
Taking a prerequisite course
If the school or institution you are enrolled in asks you to take up a prior course which is mandatory for admission to the main course. The study permit will be valid until the duration of the prerequisite course, plus an additional year. After you get accepted into the main program, you must then apply to extend your stay as a student.
Completion of course before the expiry of the study permit
If the course you are enrolled in commences early, the permit will be valid for a period of additional 90 days from the date of completion, even if the study permit has a validity of six months more. Your studies will be completed on the date notified by the school on the completion letter, degree or diploma certificate. You must provide a document of proof of the date your school informs you, or the date you get your degree, diploma or certificate. If you fail to provide proof, the government will use the earliest issue date on the document.
Is it possible to leave Canada while studying?
If you exit Canada while your studies are still going on, upon arrival to Canada you might need to produce proof that you are enrolled in a school.
If you have a visitor visa, it should still be valid.
Who can apply for a study permit?
Eligibility Criteria
• Enrollment at a Designated Learning Institution in Canada
• Proof of funds for the payment of course fees, lifestyle requirements until the course commences and departure funds.
• Producing a character certificate issued the police proving no criminal record.
• Medical certificate proving no acute illness.
